Rising Excitement

Here is another 12-Bar Blues by Madelyn. It’s a perfect teaching piece for level 1 FJH/Faber students who like rock ‘n’ roll and have learned to play 3-note chords. The song uses all root-position I-IV-V chords, with a broken left-hand chord accompaniment.

Moon Walk

Here is a 12-Bar Blues composition by Madelyn. In this piece, Madelyn uses major/minor 3rds in her left-hand chords. This is a fun supplementary piece for students learning about I-IV-V chords and the difference between major and minor.

Mixed Feelings: Sorrow and Anger

This spring I began teaching students 12-Bar Blues as a means of learning improvisation, scales, and I-IV-V chords. Most students really enjoy the process, so I thought, what a great way to introduce composition! So here is the first of hopefully many other pieces.

This piece is the very first composition this student composed. At the end of lessons one day, she asked if she could play her 12-bar blues, and she pulled out this piece, fully notated on staff paper. In order to prepare her piece for this blog, she learned how to use Sibelius, a computer notation software program. So everything you see, she typed up herself. Good job Madelyn!
